A chat around a braai led to a dare to not have any alcohol for a month. So dare accepted and Feb has been alcohol free for me. I don't normally drink much anyway; a whiskey after work and maybe a few glasses of wine at socials or over the weekend. So this was surprisingly hard! Mostly because there are few nice alternatives and some prick always thinks you need to explain why you are having a Grapetiszer...

So this is a shout-out to you if you are dealing with a real issue or addiction. It must be a hard road and I cannot really relate to your struggle, but tonight I am think of you and wish you strength to see this through.

Hi. I am me and I had a drinking problem.
Stopped about 6 years ago.
It was hard.. very much so.
But ill admit I was out of control.
What helped me a lot was the alcohol free beers you get.
But yes I have to say if you stop drink completely then don't touch the stuff. Not even one.
I did make that mistake and it was like stopping all over again.
So I made myself the promise not to touch alcohol ever again. It wil not rule my life again..
Just like my x. Will not touch her again either.
But I must say I confess to being a lesbian I really like ladies..

Most people on this site do have a particular addiction that is punting! Also not easy to give up. Probably a more expensive habit than alcohol - but more pleasurable!

I stopped drinking alcohol a few years ago when doing a yoga challenge, and I never started again :))) I don't miss it at all.

Same. I experienced the same thing, it bothers other people more than it ever bothered me. I occasionally drink virgin cocktails when out, or a rock shandy.

So true! We're always looking for something to be above baseline cos normal mood is so boring to me

I think my new addiction is healthier. Nootropics! It's like experimental supplements.

Some do nothing but some do give a mood or energy boost like ashwaghanda or Noopept for me

Previously it was Tramadol.

I feel that opiates are overlooked for depression due to the addiction potential.

It's all about moderation I suppose.
