We also accept all major Credit/Debit Cards.

Please note: a minimum surcharge of R50 per transaction is applicable.

I saw these words written on an active ESA advertiser's website.

According to the SARB (South African Reserve Bank), this is illegal and should be reported:

8.5 'No surcharge' rule: In South Africa, merchants are not allowed to surcharge consumers when they use a card to purchase goods and services. The 'no surcharge' rule aims to prevent discrimination against any cardholder by adding additional fees for using a card.

What do you guys do?

Well they somehow need to compensate for the "tax" they have to pay on non-cash transactions. Lol

Think there's a few things not quite above board in this industry, but how are you going to stop that?

Anyway cash is safest i feel

That means then also banks are breaking the rules by charging your more fees if you withdraw cash from another banks teller.
There are alot businesses that stipulate that if you buy for under R100 they charging card fees extra.

It is perfectly understandable.
The card machine vendors rip off small vendors yet barely charge large corporate anything at all. If government wants to make dictates like that then they need to sort out card machine vendors / banks too.

Some liquor stores do that. The reason for that is that some customers want to tap for one quart black label and the profit margin of that goes on the transaction fees for the card machine so there no profit on that item, hence the surcharge. I don't think venues should be doing that tho.

Welcome back Mr AE! xxx

Personally I don't charge extra when my regulars want to pay by card but i do incur a fee that I have to pay. I think it should be acceptable to pay a small extra surcharge if you choose to use that method of payment due to convenience.
It will cost you the same in fuel, banking fees, time, etc, drawing cash if you think about it but that's just me :)

Miss KB!

I second that. And it's not because you are my other half...

The fact is that the credit card system we use does have very high costs

Big hugs always
