Is there anyone that can explain this to me in layman's terms please? A client told me to look into it but I don't understand how it works.

It was linked to the MMM ponzi scheme or Mavro scheme, which collapsed.
Stay away!

Probably a Ponzi scheme.
It's unfortunate how so many people fall victim to these schemes.
The last scheme to collapse was Pipcoin, each Pipcoin started out at R100 and ended 2016 at 20c
Yip, a loss of 99.8%

@Jordan Bitcoin is a digital currency. Here are 2 links that explains how bitcoins work. The one link goes in depth wrt to the technical aspect of it and the other is in layman's terms.
www.coindesk.com/information/what-is-bitcoin/
bitcoin.org/en/how-it-works

I have been accepting Bitcoin payments on some of my online businesses (not my massage business) for quite some time now, with no problems so far, but the bitcoin transactions are processed through my chosen secure payment gateway. So my advice is that if you are planning to accept Bitcoin payments, imo then instead of accepting peer to peer Bitcoin payments, it is best to create a merchant account with a reputable and secure payment gateway company that processes bitcoin payments on your behalf and then enable online payments on your website, if you do have a website. That eliminates the potential of someone scamming you.

Having said that, very few South Africans make use of Bitcoin, so imo, unless you will be trading in goods or services online, where a great percentage of your customers are from abroad, then you do not really need to offer Bitcoin as a payment option.

Thanks for the advice.
So I think I will give it a miss this rather.

Bitcoin is *NOT* a Ponzi scheme and has absolutely nothing to do with MMM. It is not a scheme at all. It is a "crypto-currency" and it is actively traded around the world, even by governments. They are expensive too. One bitcoin is current just under a thousand US dollars. Trading in them is tricky so not for the casual person, so you are probably smart to give it a miss, but not because it's any form of Ponzi scheme.

Oraljim is correct. It is not a scheme at all, its a legit digital currency.

Bitcoin is not a Ponzi scheme or any type of scheme in any way. It's the worlds first proper unregulated and decentralized currency that allows people to make peer to peer payments with zero interchange between banks.

See below for more information for South African use

www.bitcoinzar.co.za

It's by no means a safe investment, the same with any currency, but it is a safe method of payment. To give you an idea of what it's about and how serious people are taking it, see below as to how it reacts to world economics.
