My heart broke a little yesterday. My maid, whom I have always thought of as fairly well educated - certainly an excellent command of English and able to have real conversations - asked me if she should come to work during the lockdown. I told her absolutely NOT and that she shouldn't work for any of her other employers either. Then she hit me with the saddest thing I have heard: "I am not scared of the virus it doesn't affect black people."

I wish we could find the people who start spreading such dangerous lies in the first place. I have no way of judging how widespread this ignorance is but I was able to, after a good long chat, convince my maid she was wrong and that she should tell all of her friends and family the same thing.

I think when we look back on this we will find that ignorance and laziness have been the biggest danger we faced.

@oraljim. I don't know why you're surprised. It's similar to white people believing that HIV is a black disease.
