I don't really know Johannesburg at all...
I just wanted to find out if Rivonia and Morningside are safe areas, or should I rather avoid them?

Reasonably safe (but don't be stupid and drive around in your convertible with the top down, flashing cash and a Rolex - that could get you robbed anywhere in Johannesburg).
Certainly two of the more upmarket areas.

Have to agree with @2old2, both rivonia and morningside are safe just don't be to comfortable in your boots and flash expensive things as that could get you caught off guard. Xx
