There is a black man on my street that collects anything out of the dustbins to sell,plastic etc,he does this every Thurs, I always buy him pap,which is very filling, a small tin of pilchards and a small bottle of mageu

A simple thing to do, buy a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter and a packet of sandwich bags, +-R100, the peanut butter will probably do 3 loaves, so each sandwich with bag costs about R4

Each loaf makes about 10 sandwiches, put each one in a bag, put all the bags back in the empty loaf bag, keep them on the seat next to you, when you pull up give them a sandwich, a stomach not rumbling and sore with hunger can mean a lot more than R5 in your pocket,

If I have a loaf of bread and you have none, and I give half to you then we both have a little something and neither of us goes hungry

Be kind and give not expecting nor wanting anything in return

Before Covid etc. the guys used to fight for their intersection.

Now days there is one on each point of the intersection.

The family share cars (basically last in first out principle)So there is a family, husband wife and 3 kids that sit on the corner at a traffic light and once a month the missus buys them a few hundred rands worth of stuff (tinned food, tooth paste, pasta, soap etc)She will not give them cash!

Now when they see that car coming past they expect it

At the golf course, on Saturdays we use their kitchen. The local green grocer donates all his produce not good for sale but still useable (Buy local) The local Spar donates all the bread that is reaching its sell by date. We make soup and donate it

@Jake and @peterb, this just made me think of how wasteful we are. If we extend your thinking - every time I buy a loaf of bread, maybe i should immediately give away half (godknows ow much bread has gone bad and has i have thrown out, and am sure many on this platform throw out everything from bread to prime steak...).

On cash, i used to judge, but more recently I have tried not to judge, because as Sylvia mentioned, you don't know what the next person is going through. It's easy to happily judging them for trying to run away from their problems, forgetting you have your own vices (good or bad) to 'balance' yourself and even extending to the privilege of being able to afford the purple world to "run away' from your problems

I agree @johnnyafrica. @Jakeburns also makes valid points.

I help where and when I can, because I used to really struggle and people's kindness meant a lot to me. If I give money or whatever to someone, it's theirs. Whatever they use it for, is up to them. Respecting people's agency is important. And if you can't give money, you can still give friendliness and respect.

I gave one guy a R20 at a robot. Now that same guy comes running everytime to my car expecting something again.
Same thing happened at the petrol station with the petrol attendant. At the end of the day you can only do so much.

The ones that really need the help you can see a mile away. The ones that are there because uts easier than actually doing something that requires a but more effort you can also see.

A friend of mine used to spend probably 2k to 3k a week for some woman that used to stand at a particular corner every day and plead with the cars as they drove past. I mean sobbing her heart out.

This went on for the better part of a year until the lady that stood at the robot made the papers as being a drug user and she used to take all her donations and go buy her and boyfriend/hubby drugs.

They lived in a shithole and didn't made their 4 year old use a bucket as a toilet.

Maybe I am hard and uncaring but the ones that I can see really just need someone to help and tell them it will get better and instill a little hope are the ones I stop for. The rest. Sorry no.

Also if I go to a new shopping center I will give the car guard something but not my local. I mean I don't mind the R2 or the R5 but every day because the expect it because your car wasn't gone in the seven and a half minutes you were in the shop to me is a bit much. Again maybe that is just me
