Burner phone = cheap throw away. PEP, any of the mobile operators stores or takealot. Not so cheap that it doesn't do WhatsApp:-). The cell phone repair stores may also have some - but they are often pre-owned and you don't want that.

Pre-RICAed SIM can be found at most cell phone repair stores. They are often run by immigrants so are often called Pakistani shops (though may be Bangladeshi or Somali or even local).
Pop into your local shopping centre (rather than an upmarket mall) and find the cell phone repair and accessories store. They are everywhere. Ask if they have SIMs and if you need to RICA it. Almost all will have and will give you a vague head wave about the need for verification. If they don't have - ask where you can get one and they will likely direct you to a relative who has a nearby store.
Chose your network and pay R5 -R10 for the sim and R10 for a cheap recharge voucher. Try load the sim and load the voucher in the store if possible. If it doesn't work ask for one that does. If you don't have time to do this in the store and it does not work - at worst you are out of pocket for R20 and can go back or try somewhere else.

Cheap Android devices start around R400 or pull an old device out of your drawer where it has been gathering dust.

Switch off the device when not in use. Only switch on when arranging a booking or on your way to a booking.

And for the sake of your sanity and relationship (if you are in one) do not let that phone get found!

Even if you are single - it is worth having a separate phone and the extra protection it delivers!

Going back to the initial post: I suggest a polite WhatsApp as an initial contact .... something like

"My name is xxx and I saw your delicious looking profile on ESA. Could you please share any more details about your rates and services? Thank you"

You may get a warm message, or a copy paste of rates and services, or questions about your age and ethnicity. See how you feel about the response and if you will want to enquire further. Remember - WhatsApp is for booking enquirers and not a chat line.

Many ladies will ask you to call so they can get a better feel for you. Don't be offended if they ask.

On the phone bit. You can buy a cheap phone at a store but they often require that you provide them with your ID for rica purposes. Of course, you can toss the Sim and get a rica'd sim elsewhere (great advice above). But your ID would have been used for the purchase.

I don't see how the above could be a problem. But if you are extremely paranoid, you can buy a phone at a jewellery store, eg Sterns. They just take your cash and provide you with a phone, no ID required. Or you can create a burner account on Gumtree and buy one cash from someone.
