That's an interesting stance. I always thought that the occupation topic is an easy/safe (well unfortunately not for most SPs) conversation starter. If my question is not too intrusive, why do you mind the question? I know some people can use the question to try and gauge other people's economic status.
This is also my other issue with the current "dating" and even friendship environment. people ask this question to gage what level of respect to give you and whether to take you seriously or not. Most of the time they're comfortable with what you say you do and who you are until you do or say something they don't like.
I am friends with people high up with phds and careers that pay them over 50 000 a month for example. And I have friends with jobs that just get them through the month. The conversations may be different but I treat them with the exact same respect. I tend to not ask people the "what do you do" question because I don't want anyone asking me. There's alot of other things we can talk about and still have a good time.
In this industry, i guess at least every third girl has asked me what i do, once on the plinth. I have a story ready, because i am not sharing this with anyone here. :-)
But then in return, i often ask what did you do before - if you feel like sharing. Not that i expect an honest answer, and i really don't care.
But if you tell me you were a speedcop, i will get off the plinth and fuck-off. Because there is nothing as disgusting as that. :-)

I can 100% relate with this. And it's something you see very clearly with family. The asshole uncle who's a doctor gets tolerated and listened to much more than the sweet uncle who's a security guard.

LITERALLY MY FAMILY until the day rich uncle died last year. The only one from 8 siblings who "became something". It was his way or the highway for my whole family .the worst part is he couldn't have cared a damn about them .wouldn't even visit their houses because it wasn't a mansion like his was.and belittled anyone who had a kid out of marriage with zero remorse.
