A question for the tech guys, I have a punting sim but the handset I am using is registered in my name, can they trace me through the handset alone I don't think it's possible but not sure

It's a 100% possible and easy as pie to do legally. But not likely since the people doing the scams are doing illegal things and there's some basic verifications and payments to do it.

Just a side note with regards to the mobile operators - I'm not saying they are necessarily to blame for these punter scams, but they definitely leak your number on occasion.

I have a data sim as part of my cellphone contract, and literally only the mobile operator has that number - I have never ever given it out for whatever reason. Yet, lately I get marketing calls and SMS messages on that number.

Ever considered a random number generator?

Yes - sometimes MNOs get involved in clumsy marketing for their OWN services. But if it is for a third party service - then they didn't get it from the MNO.

I partly agree.
Every device had an IMEI number. There is a global "master database" of IMEI numbers, but it is not associated with the owner of the device.
If you bought the device on instalment (ie contract) from your MNO (mobile network operator) then they would keep a record, for as long as you are active on the network and while there is any balance outstanding on the device. After that - the data gets deleted after a few years.
Change network, or buy a device from a third party and you are not associated with the IMEI number.
Law enforcement could theoretically stitch together the complex thread of ownership of a device - but it would be really complex and involve multiple S205 warrants and RICA directives which would make it difficult and almost impossible without state resources!

I got a new one today, officer Johnson, says they arrested someone with fake notes and she told them she got them from me. Best part is I haven't booked in Sandton in over 3 months...... Let alone used cash recently.... He dropped the call as soon as I said we all know about this scam, blocked number immediately
