SO put a current 18 year old in this situation

Get sent to the border, get shot at daily, moving bases the driver drives over a land mine, having a dump and the camp gets attacked and my porcelain thrown gets shot out from under me (must say it was the best shit ever because naturally you are going to shit yourself)

And today you can wear ladies clothes with nappy and identify yourself as a mango tree

Yes we were train to protect, now they get schooled in how to protest and destroy.

Many a night slept under the stars, while patrolling the "Nam border", dirty, hungry, and thirsty not because we wanted to, but had to.

Could have done with a few real mango trees out there, but only "hak en steek" and lots and lots of sand.

Lol. While you 2 are reminiscing, I just want to check - You do realise you were the bad guys, right? You were serving in the military forces of, and unquestioningly protecting, a regime that is by definition a crime against humanity. "Protecting" is not a good thing, when what you are protecting is evil

So if we have to choose between a generation that is brainwashed, militarized, armed, and sent out to kill and die to defend an oppressive and odious regime and a generation that basically says "let people decide for themselves who and what they are", I'd rather have the mango trees over the unquestioning brainwashed stormtroopers.

They didn't have a choice. And they were very brave under the terrible circumstances.

I'm worried about the idea of internment camps here in the now.

In Shanghai people are being quarantined in a facility without even showers. Spend over two weeks cleaning yourself with a bowl of water.

I'll give you that there were severe consequences, but 1) there were conscientious objectors at the time whose principles meant more to them and accepted those consequences, so you can't really say "there was no choice" when other people actually made that choice.

And 2) even if there was no choice (which is bollocks, there's a difference between "no choice" and not liking the consequences of your options), they really shouldn't be condescendingly sneering at those who "protest" at injustice, when they fought to protect it.

True !
And this is not just true for this thread alone.
While we squabble amongst ourselves, they plunder unabated.
