You can set WhatsApp to not save a contact to your device, the contact gets saved only on your WA account (cloud).

Correct. You can create a contact direct and WhatsApp and it doesn't show up on your normal contacts. Your personal contacts in your normal number also doesn't pull through on your punting WhatsApp account.

Or if your phone is dual sim. Make sim1 your public number with calls,whatsapp etc. Sim2 you make a purely data sim and use that number to register your Punters whatapp account. In whatsapp you go to add account and add your sim2 number as a second account. This account you then log out of when not in use, youre then un-reachable. When you ready to punt log back in and off you go.
You can then switch between your two accounts as needed.

Somewords of advice:
*.Your partners number is visible to only you on you punters account
*.When saving names/numbers in your punters account ensure save to Gmail and save to phone is "off"
*turn off all notifications in settings
*all recieved images videos disappear from your device one you log out. So save to your locked folder in google photos if youre a hoarder like me.
*change ur profile name to an alias or just a "." To remain anonymous. This helps if you accidentally send your partner a message from your punters number. If this happens you better hope you can delete for both faster than they can read it. It will show as message deleted from "." on their side.

I leave my punting phone at the office, 1 of the staff knows about it and knows to throw it away should anything happen to me.

Samsung Secure Folder or Android Second Space is ideal for this - different pin or password to unlock. Then no need for second phone after burner sim used for additional whatsapp account

Unfortunately Apple does not accommodate this - seriously wish they would
