Desperation leads to many other things when you never get gratified with the object of your desire. Irrationality, anger, depression, humility.
I think there are differences to the result of desperation based on the effort and time it takes you to get what you desire, and how impactful the lack of it affects you in your every day life.
Being desperate for your parents to buy you a car at 18, and being desperate for for months, or years for a job when you're completely broke and in debt will result in very different outcomes both in mental and spiritual changes in a person.
So there are many levels of desperation in life, some of which none of us will ever experience. Such as the desperation for food, which lead a person lost and stranded on a mountain to eat their fellow climbers in order to survive.
We can't really pass off the desire for a non-essential thing which we can "stop wanting" as desperation. I feel like the world, including me, have lessened the seriousness of the word desperate and just throw it around when trying to avoid coming off as spoilt.
I feel like one should ever be desperate, when their survival is at stake. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.
