If I were to give the beggars along my walk to Spa R2 each, a 7 min walk would cost R12-20. At that price I may as well use Bolt. One guy always asks for food. And he will tell me what he wants too. An unsliced bread and atchar or chakalaka. Every now and then he asks for cooldrink too.I had words with him cos he shouts and runs to me every single day for money. He hasnt once asked if he can carry my packets. ( Not that I would let him cos I don't want him knowing where I live). I told him to leave me alone. And he does. Every time I feel the urge to give him food I will. But he now knows he mustn't harrass me.There are another 2 who never ask but always greet. They get my leftover food and the Pakistani Bhai will warm it for them if it's cold. I have stopped giving to all and sundry just because they ask. I rather give to a church or welfare group who helps the destitute.I have also learnt that sometimes the destitute or hungry are a lot closer to me than the beggars at robots. Some who are starving actually have jobs and homes but the money is just not enough to buy food. I saw it with my bestie. I had no idea that they couldn't buy food and were being helped by a church.I know they sold one car a month into lockdown. I thought they were planning to buy a new car. I didn't realise her hubby' salary was halved and he was working short time
I also know of people who are running around doing charity work when members of the own family are starving.
I won't say I won't give, but I realise I have to start in my own Jerusalem. It was a sobering wake-up call to realise my bestie was getting food parcels and I didn't know. One day I came there at breakfast and she told me to dish, she made oats. There was no milk, no margarine and very little sugar. I ate it. It went down very lumpy at first but it got better. The tea was watery and I lied and said I don't take sugar in my tea.

What makes you give a donation to someone in need standing at a robot
How do you know it's really someone in need
And would you help a woman or a man

I don't mind man or woman or what they use it for
I've been raised to give without expectations
Give and don't look back, but when you give make sure it's with a good heart

I trust my instincts when it comes to it. Just a few days ago I gave a generous amount to a man trying to sell heart stickers at the traffic light. The look on his face was priceless. He told me that he's been standing there for 4 hours and NOTHING. He immediately walked down to the cafe. I love paying it forward after a good few days. Not small amounts either. Seeing the joy on their faces is priceless.

If you give a man a fish, he has one meal.....If you learn man to fish he has a meal everyday. If they can stand at a robot they can do something worthwhile. Its a personal decision though.

Correct. Are you teaching them to fish, or just reciting the proverb? (Doing nothing)

I am a bit skeptical particularly with the woman who have small children with them as I have heard that these small kids and infants are rented out by their parents who get paid per day and are used as part of the persuasion for you to part with your cash.

Only when I have the urge to give. I work hard for my money, it's senseless giving it away for somebody to spend it on drugs / alcohol.
