His disgust with the odour, though, seems a bit over the top. Still, if it bothers him, I get that it could be a complete turn-off.

I just did...I pointed it out
When someone mentions mothballs in conversation I alsays jokingly say, "those moths must be big to have such big balls..."
Clothes and bedding not washed frequently enough as not taking more frequent body washing does lead to an odour one labels "old people smell".
Many a young or middle aged person stinks, never mind smells.
