Had an interesting convo with a learned friend. Will life return to normal after the 21 day lockdown ?

The answer is :

NO

By doing the lockdown, we are merely postponing the fact that the majority of the population will be infected in an exponentially growing cycle, which will crash our health system. We are hoping to spread the rate of infection over a longer term so that the health services will be able to cope with the number of hospitalizations projected.

Mkhize keeps on talking about beds in a hospital. That means absolutely nothing.

There are not enough respirators/ventilators in SA to cope. That is the deciding factor whether you will live or die. Not the fact that you have a bed in a hospital or not. The mere fact that you have a bed in a hospital just means someone is looking after you during your last days. A stranger, because we can't even visit our loved ones in their last days. Wait for that trauma to start.

So the fools that will rush out to punt after the lockdown, good luck boys, because the virus will still be around. Self isolation will still be the only way to totally safeguard yourself.

So the punting business will continue, for sure at much lower rates, as many businesses will be cash strapped and only pay proportional salaries. Or bankrupt.

So stop and think a little.

Life as we know it is busy changing. Are we going to change with it ?

Time will tell.

your "learned" friend forgets something , so far the majority of people who gets this infection only shows mild symptoms , some don't even show symptoms at all and shake the virus without even knowing it
so until the stats on this changes drastically this virus wont change much
in the last 4 months we have lost only 30 000 people worldwide
only 600 000 have been infected in that 4 months
the world has 7 000 000 000 people and counting

all taken into account and not letting emotions run away with you
this virus won't even slow down our growth rate
let alone change the world , also keep in mind that while 30 000 that have died 130 000 have recovered most of them with very little or no medical assistance

so keep your panic under control and have a drink
life will go on and in a few years from now few people will even remember this

they will be remembering the great economic collapse and millions dying of hunger because they didn't have a job

and all of that would be of political leaders making emotional decisions instead of logical ones

Im sure that you have a doctorate in epidemiology.
Please keep yourself and your family away from medical services if and when they get sick, so that the panic stricken population have access.
No doubt all you arrogant posters will be the first to complain when you can't get medical assistance.
Remember your arrogance when you lose a loved one to this. It will only be 1 of many. Who cares it just a number!!!!!. At least your pocket will be okay with the life insurance.

Y'all both correct, just focusing on different things.

The virus itself will killva lot but a few in relation to the population so minimum impact. The economic impact f this will be catastrophic though and many more will die from the indirect impact.

Did someone just say only 30000.WTF!
CAN you not see that after so much effort and measures we are still losing 1000s per day worldwide.
If your loved ones were amongst the 1000s that die today will it still be OK to sacrifice them by not adhering to measures. These measures are not easy to implement and you can actually see the strain on politicians making these decisions. Let's not even go to the health care workers who will be putting themselves and their families at risk tremendously as numbers go up because some F ups feel its fine to kill a few 1000s per day by neglegent behavior.
Flatten the curve. Stay at home unless really essential to go out. Slow transmission rates for yourself to receive best medical care in the Event you or some you love displays severe signs.
Reckless behavior in the last week or so will only be evident in next few days as we know about the asymptomatic stage.
People may be sitting at home with asymptomatic disease.
21 day lockdown also allows time for infected asymptomatic individuals to display signs in the safety of their homes and makes it easier to trace and manage contacts..
Please just behave for once.
All they ask for ppl to stay at home. I'm sure health care workers wish they could stay home to be w their families instead of worrying whether they'll infect them coming home treating the ill.
Stay safe. Stay home

Granted majority will be mild disease but absolute numbers of those w severe disease is above the threshold that any country and its medical health system can manage and therefore it's a health crisis which needs the world's attention. People can't handle when an SP double books clients. What will happen when you're fighting for the same ventilator for yourself or someone you care for. Stay the F off the streets and stop mingling.

You just need to look at Italy to know we have no choice here. Yes they have an old population and the highest flu death rate in the world, but, we have hiv, people living in very concertrated circumstances and a poor health system.
The 21 days will not be the end. I dont think any of us know or understand how bad its still going to get both from the pandemic and economy.

Calm down gents.... now is not the time to be fighting. We're supposed to be standing together in these times. What is humanity if we can't stick together and aim for a common goal. Human prosperity is not about what we as individuals can do but rather what we together can do.
