THE THING BENEATH CONTROL

Control can look beautiful.
Composure.
Discipline.
Silence.
Nothing spilling over.
Nothing revealing too much.
But sometimes I wonder---
what is being held underneath it?
Because the quieter the surface becomes,
the more curious I become
about what is moving beneath it.
Perhaps surrender isn't losing control.
Perhaps it is discovering
that there was something underneath the control
you were never brave enough to meet.
Still waters can hide very old hungers.
