Even the little gel stoves work well for boiling water or just warming up something to eat or making a toasted cheese, frying an egg, 2 min noodles, etc.

Definitely don't switch geyser off. Someone I used to know, thought that by switching off the geyser would lower their electricity bill, hell no. It's cheaper to keep it running. When you switch it off and then on again after a few days, it has to heat up all that cold water and some don't know, but a geyser has an element and most people do know anything with an element draws alot of electricity.

Small camping burners are reasonably priced at mica R400, gas canister is R85. Ideal for boiling water for coffee or a quick meal
