Who still remembers the above number from Telkom. But lately it's a different type of enquiry, a little bit more spicy than just asking to look up a phone number. Yes, that's digits my number ends in. How cool is that?!?!?

My younger relatives couldnt believe we could phone and find out the time. My mom recently found an old telephone directory from 19voetsek. 2 of the kids fought over it cos they need to do a mondeling about something from the past that we don't use anymore. Luckily I had a tape recorder with a cassette that actually works and plays pretty well. A Kool and the Gang cassette. But someone found something even better .... A mixed tape recorded from Radio Good Hope. And a friend whose kid is in the same class found an old telefoonboekie. Her kids laughed cos who writes down telephone numbers? The odd thing is after a while you knew most people's numbers by heart. Today I only know the family home landline number cos its been the same or almost the same for 30 yrs. I know nobody else's numbers. I actually remember our original phone number. Even remember granny's. One of my relatives made a family vid and titled it 72**70. It was pics of all the people who lived around there (we were all related, some more distant than others but we were all connected) and my gran was the only one with a phone around that corner and everyone came to call from her house for 5c. And the odd thing is it was never too much trouble to go call Aunty Sue 3 doors down cos her sister from Godvergeetfontein will call back in 5 mins

My spending money was 5c /day, most days and although that was a bit low, you could buy any of the following- a Chomp, ice lolly, small NikNaks, Bunny Licks, a Lekkasmekka which was a long plaited toffe, similar to something like Fizzers, quite a few Wilson blocks (twice as thick as today's Wilsons), a handful of Chappies or Wicks, Dimes or Dunes which is similar to but milder than Halls, a toffee apple and my busfare from Wynberg to Busy Corner was 5c
