Now this is one crime I can get behind the perpetrator losing an appendage. They are traitors to the country worse than a murderers. The lowest level of he'll is reserved for traitors and mutineers.

The cable thefts will continue as long as scrapyards continue to buy -

It would be way easier to police and arrest scrapyard dealers that break the law by buying the copper etc

They should receive v harsh sentences .
Trying to catch the actual thieves is akin to trying to arrest the small corner drug dealer who will be replaced immediately by another.

Arresting and shutting down scrapyards that buy stolen copper would yield better results in my humble opinion.

Hanging for murder, chopping off hands for stealing etc. are all deterring factors and some people may feel that it will work.
But based on the issues as set out above it will never work in SA.
In any case, you must first catch and prosecute a criminal before executing the penalty and we all know what is happening in our country...

If we had to chop off hands for stealing, we'd have a limbless Parliament.

If we implement it here is SA ... more than half the population would be facing the death penalty ... including probably 99% of government ... that is why it will never get instituted.
