Hi all,

Travelling soon and need some dollars and Thai Baht.

Any guidance on the easiest and/or cost efficient way to get foreign currency?

Thanks

Your bank but if you have a visa or Mastercard, better just use it whenever you need it to swipe or draw money with as it is defenetely the most cost effective.

Thailand has a bad reputation for card duplication and card fraud so be careful.

Safest is to set-up Google/Apple pay with a virtual card where the CVV changes regularly.

1. Carry some dollars in cash. Preferably $100 notes
2. Don't carry bhat from here. Exchange when you get there.
3. Don't exchange at the airport. The rates are terrible.
4. Exchange for bhat in the city. Go to the Arab area in the Nana district. Its across the road from Nana plaza. They give the best rates and you don't have to show your passport to exchange. Saves a lot of hassle and stress of having to carry your passport around.
5. The same area will have SIM cards at very good rates. You will need a data only package.
6. Get a shyft card from std bank. You can control the funds on the card so if it gets lost or duplicated there is only so much you could lose.
7. Use grab taxi or bolt to get a ride from the airport to your hotel. Make sure to load your credit card details on the app before you leave. You won't be able to do it when you are there. If the bolt or grab taxi driver asks for cash when they collect you tell them to cancel the trip and get out.
8. Get a vodacom prepaid sim and load 1gb of roaming data so you can connect when you land. It only costs R99 and is well worth it.
9. Alternatively you can book an airport pick up online from here so you don't have to worry about grabbing a taxi when you arrive. They will wait for you at the arrivals area with a board with your name.

Worse case scenario just go to the airport, next to international arrivals.

The Plaza in Fordsburg is the place to go.
You can ask anyone where you can get dollars.
There is also someone in Houghton named Mo Dollar who deals in the currency.
