I employed a guy and about a month later he introduced me to his wife who I recognised as a ex WG. Luckily she did not recognise me but always had a suspicion she did but did not let on
He was with me for nearly 4 years never once mentioned anything to him or anyone else

I'd not tell him that and will never mention it. Though we live in a world where everybody "must" know everything, I'm still old school in that some things are best left unsaid and in any case it's non of your business what happened in their past. He might already know and is happy so leave it alone...
