Being back in business

Seeing some WGs come and go and come back again.
This led me thinking about the industry in general. Do WGs generally supplement their incomes on a periodic basis by being WGs. Or the aim is to go in for a couple of years and get out and come back if the going gets tough.
This is obviously a personal question and I respect it if it's too invasive
