My understanding is that those terms are an apartheid relic and were used to distinguish between (and cause further divisions between) people with a Malay / Indonesian heritage and people with a mixed heritage or other background (like St Helena). May also indicate and divide on religious grounds as those with a Malay/Indonesian heritage are usually Muslim.
I have no issue with people calling themselves whatever works for them - but as someone who is not from those communities, I struggle with the terms and use the term "coloured" but with a degree of unease because of the apartheid connotations and because I don't think it truly reflects the wonderfully diverse communities being described!
