I agree with all four postings on this intersting new thread.
A similar experience, whilst also feeling helpless in that why will her nearest family members not step in, take control and arrange rehabilitation.
If everybody walks away the worst is unavoidable.
Family will only help as far as they are able to. Often they have tried so many times before. Rehab is very expensive. I have cousins who are psychiatric nurses and have worked with addicts both in private and state institutions. What I am posting is with a bit of info I heard from them. Getting court ordered rehab isn't that easy and if the person doesn't want help there isn't much you can do.
People think its as easy as tv shows portray. All the family gets together and say their say, everybody cries and the addict goes to rehab.... as my cuz always reminds us, its staged drama with a hint of fact.
Many families depend on the wg so they say nothing as long as they benefit and in some cases are addicts themselves.
A neighbour has an addict niece. Their family have gotten her into rehab so many times. She was in rehab again a few months ago. She has relapsed again and the family has realised they cannot keep going through the drama. They are now going to child welfare to get the son placed on the care of an aunty. They are fed up now. They have decided to withdraw. Tough love. They also have to do what is right for the child which right now formalising who his legal guardian is.
Another neighbour told me he spent 40k a few years ago for rehab for his daughter. Hers was a success story first time. And it was actually more to do with meeting her bf than anything else.
If the addict wants help and wants to change and do the work, its all worth it.
