American blacks always refer to themselves as African-American, but the rest of Americans do not usually say 'I am Italo-American, Irish-American, Anglo-American, Jewish-American, Bulgaro-American,' etc etc. Some stigma will be there forever. Like most South African muslims do not like to be referred to as 'indian', but love to be called muslims, regardless most came from India... another long subject, not for this forum, but what I am trying to say is let it be, in a century or so maybe that will disappear, and only disappears when the complexes and insecurities fall away.
